Frage von mar g: I have a 11 month lab retriever, Is it worth the cost to get a private trainer ?
Iam following a book at home now.. She does well at home but if she escapes out of house.(without her leash) we have to go through a lot to get her back in house.

Why not just go to puppy classes?

Im not sure if a private trainer is the answer. I know that one of our labs was a hellion as a puppy, but with some dog training he is now the best dog Ive ever had! Obediance classes really make a huge difference, and if you love him then why not make the investment?
Private trainers or puppy classes doesn’t matter. What matters is how much time you yourself are going to be able to put into it. It’s not just training the dog, the handler has to be “trained” as well.
i would def have a trainer, weather it be private or a class. Labs are great dogs, and puppies at heart forever. Your dog may need a job, they were born and raised to be hunters. it may help to walk or run your puppy once or twice a day as well.
Maybe not private lessons, but joining a class would be a good idea, and they usually aren’t too expensive.
What is the problem with the escaping? Is she jumping the fence or bolting through open doors? About doors — teach her to sit before going through doors, and don’t allow her to go through the door until AFTER you have gone through, or otherwise released her. Also, I am assuming you are having trouble getting her back because her recall is not great. A trainer can help you with that. There are lots of games to help you reinforce recall. Here’s a website which talks about how to get a better recall:

And make sure she is getting enough exercise, because sometimes a frustrated and energetic dog will become an escape artist because they need to RUN. Tired dog is always a better-behaved dog.
i dont see why not but just find out info on your trainer first b/c u dont want to spend all ur money on a fake……see i took my boston terrier to puppy classes at petsmart for a 100.00 and it work for him…it was cheap and simple and now he is lot better…..so i wish you and you the best of luck……..
recall in a dog, or returning, is one of the hardest things for a dog to learn well. frankly, if you are learning from a book, I would invest in a certified trainer. you obviously need more help than you are getting and the current situation is dangerous.
another thing: a trainer may help straighten out other causal problems for this behavior. is the dog getting enough exercise and stimulation? a casual walk around the block won’t do for an 11 month-old lab. you need to really get that heart rate up and tire the dog.
I would absolutely get a trainer and yes, I think a private trainer is a good option. Just make sure, if you do that or choose to go to classes, that the trainer is certified. All trainers are not alike and at least this way you know they are experienced and are taking classes to hold their certification. Make sure their certification is up-to-date. You can interview them like a prospective employer would interview you.
